David Duke, an ex-Grand Wizard for the Ku Klux Klan and a former state senator in Louisiana, attends a debate at a historical black university. What could possibly go wrong?
For starters, the auditorium was empty except for news crews and the howling protesters outside.
CBS News reports David Duke and the five others who took the stage on Wednesday at Dillard University in New Orleans are vying for U.S. Senator David Vitter's seat. The Tea Party lawmaker claims he's not running again because he's imposing term limits on himself…But that may have more to do with that pesky prostitution scandal.
In any case, 60 or 70 protesters showed up, furious that a known racist like David Duke was allowed on their campus. School officials explained the debate was scheduled long before anyone knew he would take part, but many students still insisted it should have been cancelled. The protesters got the last laugh, however. Their presence seems to have rattled the retired grand wizard badly. When asked a question about the future of Obamacare, he chose to defend himself and his racist supporters instead.
‘First off, Yeah, I'm the bad guy, because I defend the people of this country that made this country great. That gave us our Constitution and our freedom. And we're losing our rights in America.'
That's right, David Duke just wants to protect white people from all this rampant discrimination. As for Obamacare, it's just another "socialist handout" for "welfare recipients and illegal aliens." Meanwhile "hardworking, middle class" white people "get the shaft."
Of course, his long and digressive defense of racism and hate took up most of his floor time. But when the moderator, John Snell, cut him off, David Duke had a hissy fit.
"Would you not interrupt me and give me my time? Look, you are not one of the debaters here, I'm sorry."
When Snell allowed David Duke an extra minute - while still insisting he answer the question he'd actually been asked - the U.S. Senate candidate screeched:
"You're not a moderator, you're a typical media hack!"
The moderator tried to move things along, but the one-time Ku Klux Klan leader howled:
"You're gonna silence me?! You're gonna prevent me from answering the question because you wanna make a point?!"
The man declared, "I'm not opposed to all Jews," but - and there's always a "but."
"There is a problem in America with a very strong, powerful, tribal group that dominates our media and dominates our international banking."
