Washington (dpa) - Former California governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger said Sunday he will not run for US Senate despite rumours that he was considering returning to politics.

"I'm deeply flattered by all of the people who have approached me about running for Senate, but my mission right now is to bring sanity to Washington through redistricting reform like we passed here in California," Schwarzenegger said on his Facebook page.

The Austrian-born actor and politician has recently had high-profile clashes with US President Donald Trump over the television show "The New Celebrity Apprentice," after Schwarzenegger took over hosting from Trump and recently quit after one season of filming.

Instead of running for office, Schwarzenegger said he would work independently to advocate for more fair allocation of congressional districts. The process for drawing the districts is controlled by state legislatures and critics charge it leads to the unfair entrenchment of politicians.

Schwarzenegger served as California governor from 2003 to 2011 as a Republican.
